This trophy is presented to the Second boat overall in the IRC Rated Class
In an earlier race, a competitor approached and suggested that the winner, Chris Ratsey, in his yacht "Evenlode" may have fouled his boat. Like a true gentleman, Chris declines the Gold Roman Bowl and withdraws his declaration. Major Windeler was so impressed with his Corinthian spirit and sportsmanship that he had a special Silver Bowl produced as a keeper prize. Chris later went on to win the Gold Roman Bowl in 1938.
A plaque reads, "Left to the ISC by the late TC Ratsey for the third RIR Challenge Trophy".Â

This picture shows the three trophies all produced from the original pattern of the Ancient Roman Drinking Vessel.
In 1930/31, Major Cyril Windeler, an ISC Member, saw the original ancient drinking vessel in a Goldsmiths in London. It had been dredged up from an old Roman Wharf on the banks of the River Thames. The find was widely reported in the National Newspapers at the time. He liked the look of it and thought what a splendid trophy this would make. He then commissioned the firm to make a replica trophy for the first Round the Island Race.
Other replica trophies were made as trophies for the Race.
